What does extra amniotic fluid mean?
(Polyhydramnios) The fluid also helps your baby move around. Having too much of this fluid is called polyhydramnios. It means that there’s more fluid around your baby than there should be. In some cases, too much amniotic fluid doesn’t cause problems. In other cases, it can cause problems such as preterm labour.
How do you get rid of excess amniotic fluid?
Treatment may include:
- Drainage of excess amniotic fluid. Your health care provider may use amniocentesis to drain excess amniotic fluid from your uterus.
- Medication. Your health care provider may prescribe the oral medication indomethacin (Indocin) to help reduce fetal urine production and amniotic fluid volume.
What does it mean when you have two amniotic sacs?
The number of gestational sacs and fetal heartbeats are correlated with chorionicity. Gestational sacs form a chorion and placenta. A single gestational sac observed with two heartbeats indicates a monochorionic twin pregnancy. Two gestational sacs indicate a dichorionic pregnancy.

With one baby (sometimes called a singleton), there is a single baby, enclosed in a single amniotic sac framed by a single chorion and supported by one placenta. But with twins, there can be a variety of combinations. There may be one or two placentas, one or two amniotic sacs, and one or two chorions.
