Do you need 2 breathers on valve covers?
Most times if useing a pcv valve only one breather is needed. Without pvc valve haveing both covers vented is good. Need to have breather to vent the crankcase. Without a way to vent the internal pressure, this pressure will make a way out of the motor.

Yes, the breather is still necessary. The PCV system sucks fresh air through the breather, out the PCV valve and back into the intake.
Why do some valve covers have breathers?
The thought behind the breather is that you are supposed to get more fresh air flow down into the crankcase from the valve cover. This increases the cycle of oil vapor flow out of the crankcase. The added fresh air displaces the oil vapors in the crankcase with the assistance from the IM vacuum sucking it out.

If you need to drive a couple miles to get the parts needed then plug the vacuum side of PCV line and it may be okay to drive a short distance since running longer than this may cause the pressure to build up in the crankcase and cause oil leaks and engine will run lean or rich without a properly functioning PCV system …
Can I replace a PCV valve with a breather?
Don’t do it. Not on the PCV valve side. The PCV closes under boost which your breather would not. If you want, you can place a breather on the driver’s side that connects to the intake.
Is a PCV the same as a breather?
A PCV system actually clears combustion gas blowby from the engine, whereas breathers will only allow positive pressure to escape. These gases will combine with moisture in the air and oil to create acids and sludge.
What causes oil to come out of the breather?
Oil filler cap or oil fill gasket is damaged or missing. Breather mechanism is dirty, damaged or defective. Piston ring gaps are aligned. Piston rings are worn.
What happens when engine breather is blocked?
A clogged breather can cause vacuum leaks, leading to an incorrect air-fuel ratio. You will notice a decrease in overall power and acceleration, particularly at low engine speeds.
