What is the difference between 12AX7A and 12AX7WA?

Sometimes, 12AX7A tubes made for the US Military are labeled 12AX7WA. DO NOT confuse these with current production Sovtek or Chinese crap with the suffix WX, WB, or WC! These are not military tubes and are not NOS tubes at all. Also, as tube manufacturing became refined, the 12AX7A became much quieter.

What does WA mean on 12AX7?

The “W” in the part number is there to tell us its a ruggedised valve. Ruggedised valves are made to withstand more vibration than a standard type. SO this makes them ideal for amp combos where the vibration in the cabinet is higher than an amp head.

Are 12AX7 and ECC83 interchangeable?

In this article, we’ll concentrate on the question of the ECC83 vs 12Ax7 tubes. The truth is, there is no difference at all between them, and each one is interchangeable with the other. 12Ax7 (Fig 1) is merely the American name of the tube.

Can I substitute 12AX7 for 12AX7A?

no difference anyways. Correct. The 5751 has a lower mu than the 12AX7A so these are NOT equivalent. NEVER replace a 12AX7(A) and its’ equivalents numbers in a phono preamp unless you’re sure RIAA correction does not depend on its’ characteritic values.

they are interchangeable. 12ax7a has a spiral filament to reduce hum that is the difference.

What is a 12AX7WA tube?

The 12AX7WA tubes I normally buy are a NOS JAN tube made by Phillips, I’ve always guessed back in the 70s. They are a fairly high gain version “ruggedised” for the military. They can be a bit microphonic, but have a full and open voice, and plenty of gain. Sovtek have a similarly named tube. It doesn’t really compare IMHO.
